Literacy Student Turned Award-winning Author to Speak Locally (Community Event)
Time: 6:30 PM to 7:30 AM
Location: UNM-Valencia Student Community Center, 280 La Entrada, Los Lunas

Just twelve years ago, Marten Griego was functionally illiterate, depressed and a substance abuser. He was one of the estimated 46% of adults in New Mexico who can’t read or write above the 6th grade level. These days, Albuquerque-based Griego, award-winning author and publisher of the memoir Leaving the House of Tears spends his days golfing and his evenings dancing. Quite a change from the life of quiet desperation he faced as a functionally illiterate adult. Griego has partnered with the New Mexico Coalition for Literacy and the Verizon Foundation to share his dynamic story. The public is invited to attend this free event. There will also be an opportunity to participate in two workshops also led by Griego. Contact Jill Oglesby of the Valencia County Literacy Council at 505-925-8926 for more information.
